CFR
OK! Tonight is Camp Freddy Radio from 6:00pm-8:00pm (west coast) on Indie 103.1. Check the site for web cast. Our special guests tonight are a couple of the Suicide Girls. I was absent last week, but I will definitely be there for this. I don't really have a lot else to report. Rehearsals are good, I'm working on getting that Venus mp3 and the quicktime version of the videoclip. FreAk's logos are really cool, check his link if you haven't. Thank you FreAk!
1. This a goofy, unfocused question, but is your new band all about "the rock"?
Our songs right now are so varied. Most are about the rock, some are acoustic jams and some are just what we like to call, songs.
2. I was just wondering if you had anything to say or any advise about someone who wishes they could be "famous" or become a singer
Just love what you do and don't pay attention to the outcome. That's my two cents.
3. how many cigarettes do you smoke a day?!
I get asked this a lot and I have tried to avoid answering, but you guys won't seem to let me off the hook. I would say between 1 and 2 packs a day. I have spent the last year seriously considering quitting and how to go about doing so.
4. Wondering about Spread evolving into TNO?
You know, I can't really recall the timeline, but Spread started with Chad Smith and I. We later learned that there was already a band with the name Spread so we were stuck. My way around it was to create Spread Entertainment, which is still officially not quite realized. (Drugs really can get in the way of dreams.) Then, Chad went back to work with RHCP, so I just went with my name as I didn't really have a band at the time. As time went on and I kept mixing and remixing, the whole "Spread" vibe was kind of lost. I still like TNO, but I guess the reason I put up the old versions of the raw material is because those tracks are closer to how they were originally written. (Fin)
5. where'd you come up with the baby-uni-spread-whatever-the-hell-your-pretty-icon-is-and-I-should-know-but-I'm-a-really-lame-fan?
I went through a phase where I was all about Unicorns as the opposite symbol of how I felt. I researched all these artists online and found one named Tim Jacobus. He made the logo for me. As time went on and I changed my life and outlook, I realized that the Unicorn could also stand for something to strive for, so I ended up keeping it. Plus, it just looks cool. It's not often you see a "hard" unicorn. There is more about this in the book, due out in October.
6. Do you ever get to see any British comedys?
My favorites are Fawlty Towers and The Office.
7. Did you get any vocal coaching before TNO? How'd it feel mainly singing and playing on the tour, any nerves?
I worked with a coach named Ron Anderson. Did it make me nervous? Sure did. That was part of the fun. Walking through that kind of uncertainty.
8. So...who designs these pants then?
A few questions about this. They are a simple pair of Prada pants that I had bondaged out. Kind of a Dave/Prada design.
9. do you think that local fans will have any chance of getting into the show when you guys do decide to play, or is the guestlist going to be filled with industry types?
Of course! It won't be an industry event. In fact, it won't really be an event, it'll just be a little show. We will figure out a way to make it available to the locals. (Al - If the September show comes to be how about having a drawing for a handful of guest passes on this site? - Exactly!)
10. what are your thoughts on the rock star poker thing you're doing with tommy lee and john rzeznik? do you know either of them from any past run-ins?
Not too many thoughts on the matter, I just love playing cards. I do know Tommy pretty well, but I have never met Johnny. Should be a fun time.
Off...

wow...whenever i come back here...there's always something new...i love that! this is simply, one of the best sites i have ever seen...the people that post here...the host (of course!!)...everything about it is awesome. i really look forward to coming here everyday.
oh...and about the smoking...instead of going cold turkey...a good way is to replace a cigarette with something else, like a piece of gum or something...just my personal two cents about it. good luck with that...and if you decide not to quit...your decision and i'll respect that. much love for ya!!

Hi Dave!
I gotta say, I really empathize with you on the smoking issue...I started smoking very young (12 years old) and smoked for almost 20 years before finally quitting.
The bad new is...quitting is very, very hard. I don't believe anyone can really quit until they are damn good and ready, sick of smoking and committed 200% to quitting. Definitely, as I learned, not something you can do because someone else wants you to...it's gotta be all about you wanting to.
The good news is, I quit several years ago and, once I got past it, it was like I had never smoked. I have no desire at all to smoke cigarettes now so, no chance of a relapse.
When you're ready...best of luck to you.
Have a great weekend!

Hi Felipe,
Good for you, lol~~!
Hey Dave,
Any chance of either of your bands playing NYC soon? B.B. KIng's place has a nice set up or perhaps the Hammerstein? It would actually be great to see you guys in a smaller venue. Though considering how many fans want to see you, that might be impossible. The old Ritz club would have been perfect!
Hi Eric B & Cookie,
Yes, I guess I WAS regurgitating once again... but I have good reason to.
Since most of the current posters are are not familiar names from Dave's old messageboards, save for people like Denise & Deena, I basically wanted to warn the 'new' people here from feeding into that wackos nonsense.
I am quite annoyed because, as usual, this sort of slim has to seep out of the woodwork to try to ruin a very good thing we have here.
Thanks for the responses. This WILL be my last mention of it.
Peace & love!
itanja~~!

Hi Dave!!
First of all... you the reason i got my guitar. i was 16 at the time. I actually really suck at playing and never got time to learn anything cool. I was wondering, what was the first song you learned to play?

Hey Dave
I just found this site the other day and i cant believe how open you are with everything. I just had a quick question. Being hispanic was it anymore difficult to break into the business? I just want to know myself being a singer. Thanks in advance if you answer this question.

Hey everyone!
Dave, of the artists that are no longer with us, who would you have most liked to have worked with?
Chill!

Dave, ever play with D/s relationships?? The Domme in me thinks you're a switch at heart. Am I wrong??
Itanja, while I am new to this site, I am familar with what you're talking about. It happens from time to time on another site I hang out on. Dave have a great group here. Hopefully, the good ones will over-power the less nice ones.

Buff unicorns! Yeah! happy thought of the evening, thanks (: Brtish comedy... oh, you have to for the very life within your bones (is there life within yur bones? uh, marrow, I guess...) check out a show called "Spaced", both series(es?) of it are on video/DVD (you can get it cheap as hell online), I think you'd like it (one of the best shows to ever air IMO)... very cult-y.
love, Soph. xx
Posted by: Sophia at July 24, 2004 12:18 PM
Hi Dave,
It's funny that you should mention "The Office" as one of your favourite shows. I considered asking you if you'd heard of it, but I figured it'd be too far-fetched. Now that's irony. If you like "The Office", you should check out "Knowing Me, Knowing You with Alan Partridge", or "I'm Alan Partridge". Also hilarious.
Here's a new question:
Which album (of the bands you played for, or your solo, or the upcoming new band) did you enjoy working on the most, and why?
Thanks for your continued commitment to your fans around the world.

Dave~ My Mom quit smoking after 45 years. She snuffed out her last cigarette on a Wednesday night, went to a hypnotheripst, and was the Great American Smokeout Poster Girl all day Thursday. This was almost 12 years ago, and she's never picked it up since. Eat oranges like they're going out of style, and if you get a craving that's going to break you, wet your finger, and tap it in some baking soda, then put it on the end of your tongue. Your body perceives nicotine and soda as alkiline, so the baking soda makes your system feel you've had a cig. My DAD quit by putting an unopened pack in his shirt pocket, and talking himself out of cig whenever he'd reach for the pack. I don't know anybody esle who could do it that way!
As a current? former? (;-)pathetic?) Baby Unicorn -yes, dear God, I did just write that out loud -I can state on behalf of all of us how wonderful it is to see you well and happy. Its past due and richly deserved.
Hey, do you still have any copies of Scott's Unicorn Women? I think the new kids would enjoy them!

Dave...like the original spread versions as well... thnx fer putting them up here. Any chance you will be posting more of these old rawer versions? Would be cool to hear all your pre- TNO Spread versions since they aren't available..or are they...?? Ever seen the Canadian show "Trailer Park Boys"? I hear it plays in the U.S. now but all the swearing is censored out, which would make for nearly no dialogue left...its out on DVD now i thinks...really funny....wanna share my artwork with everyone here so hope youz all enjoy it: www3.telus.net/scottmcm/gallery2.htm

Hey there. I've been looking for information on a track by Jet, "Giovanni," supposedly on the album Framed Under Ice. Several net sources credit your guitar work on this track, yet I can't seem to find any info on the actually album and/or band. Any light to shed?

Dave - thanks for answering my question on smoking. It was really a throwaway question, but your reply seems to have led to a response from a few peeps.
Personally I enjoy smoking occasionally, mostly socially at weekends when I'm out enjoying a drink with friends. I used to smoke more but cut right down. I haven't quit completely yet though!

hey dave!
i was listening to 'somebody else' that you posted up a few days ago. it sounds a lot like radiohead in some parts, especially the vocals. what is your opinion of them? was thom yorke's singing style inspiration for the way you performed this song, or did it just come out that way? either way, i think it is a beautiful song, thanks for letting us download it!

Dave,
Are you a fan of old (pre-1960) movies? If so, which ones do you like? Sometimes the best movies on cable/satellite are on TCM (Turner Classic Movies).
Are you a fan of the 7-string guitar? Have you ever recorded a song using one?
Thanks,
Mike from NYC

Thanks for the answer Dave, I didn't realise you would get The Office out in the US a true gem when it comes to humour.
Fawlty towers, my favourite scene is where Basil loses the plot with his car and starts to beat it with a tree lol haven't you just wanted to do that every now and then :)
Robert I just watched "Trailer Park boys for the first time the one with Alex Lifeson from Rush very funny. (Going to see Rush in September in Manchester can't wait:)) Shame I am in Europe otherwise I would come to your gig too Dave.
Freak like the song, like I said you've got talent dude:)
Dave if you didn't posess your talent as a musician, what do you think you would have been doing?
Happy Sunday Folks :)

Hey Dave, a quick comment on the "try to stop smoking" comment.
My girlfriend used to smoke, a combination of a bad temper, inability to have patience, and just the fact that she "likes smoking"
She got on Wellbutrin (the anti-depressant) and is a little more easy going about things (without compromising her personality) and she hasn't had a single desire to smoke in almost 3 months. She basically quit cold turkey the day after starting this stuff. Might be an option.

Hey Dave, I'm new to the website but it's great, I'm so glad I found it. I'm a guitar player/ songwriter. And I've had the channeling experience you've described, but latley I'm having problems getting through with any of my songs, all I end up with are scraps. Any suggestions on getting into the flow? Also the smoking thing, my grandmother smoked to the day she died. In the nursing home she would find old butts ouside the nurses had finished and chew on them for her fix. quit while you can.

quitting smoking....man i quit smoking 2 and a half months ago, i've been even counting up he days, it's hard but rewarding at the same time, i have a question for you Dave, did you co-wrote "hardcharger" or was it strictly written by Porno for Pyros?, i'm a big fan of your music, i'm a part time musician and write my own stuff, another question, do you prefer PRS over strats? personally i feel strats give you endless posibilities when it comes to jam. Have a great weekend.
Posted by: Willy at July 24, 2004 07:26 PM
Cool stuff, FreAk - you're very talented!:-)
Unicorns kick ass. Sometimes I watch my horse and imagine he has a horn - lol ;-) Such cool animals, horses are. Very intuitive. They can read you like no one else can.
Many of my friends smoke, it can be very difficult to quit. My grandfather wrecked his lungs and heart smoking and died when my dad was very young (I never met him) so it always scares me a little to see people I care about smoking, but I respect their choices.
Do you think you'd ever play college campus's Dave? That'd be a cool tour, they usually have fairly small, intimate venues. If you do please hit up Madison, WI for me.:-)
I saw AMW tonight - very sad about your mom, you're a strong person to get through that.
Sweet dreams everyone :-)

Hey Dave,
Quitting smoking is difficult (more difficult than junk), no joke ... but it is one of the most rewarding things you could ever do … if i had your kinda money, i would seriously go to rehab for nicotine addiction ... unfortunately, i don't even think they even do that ... the best reality TV show would be a bunch of smokers on an island for like three months, with no smokes ... it would become very "lord of the flies" ... the truth is, you must have a great deal of self-motivation ... i mean, you quit 'cause: you're gonna have a kid, OR you just got diagnosed with end-stage COPD, OR dilated cardiomyopathy, OR cancer of the mouth, throat, esophagus, or lung, OR you wanna “be there for your loved ones, OR you don't wanna be dependent on an oxygen tank, OR you just want to "get healthy". i could go on ... but you know all this! ... the stark reality is that you are addicted AND you don't need people getting all over your ass about it ... compared to a lot of other substances, it seems fairly innocuous ... i mean, it actually increases your dopamine and serotonin to levels that are similar to, in many respects, cocaine ... but without making you psychotic! ... that is, until you run outta smokes, as your brain chemistry is actually altered in a way that it does not produce the endorphins that it naturally would without the nicotine that it now RELIES upon … so, it isn’t that EASY to quit … as people that have never smoked would have you believe ... it is EXTREMLY difficult to quit, especially without some type of help … it takes the “average smoker nine serious attempts (more than two weeks) of “quitting before they are successful … utilizing multiple modalities has more success … might i suggest that you use the patch, hypnosis or guided meditation, an antidepressant such as wellbutrin, and nicotine gum or the lozenge in CONCERT ... talk to your primary care provider about how best ATTACK this “problem … as you are not a drinker, wellbutrin is not contra-indicated and could be quite efficacious, PLEASE consider this … smoking cigarettes is not survival enhancing, but the brain doesn't know this!!! smoking is a drug addiction as devastating in the long run as heroin or cocaine … furthermore, it is even more malicious because, the negative effects are not as quickly apparent, so it's easier for everyone involved to be in denial about the seriousness of the Problem.
Sincerely,
Some Random Fran

Dave:
I just saw the America's Most Wanted episode where you discuss the capture of your mother's killer last night. Let me just say that I am deeply sorry for your loss. Your lyrics seem less and less cryptic to me the more I learn of you. For example, Hungry... "Where is my mother? Will she be there when I am gone?" I'm just glad that they brought that son of a bitch down, and I hope it brings much closure when the sodium pentothal, pancuronium bromide, and potassium chloride invade his veins.
Other than that, I want to thank you for bringing this 16 year old into the rock world... One of the first songs I remember hearing in my youth was Been Caught Stealing. I also remember many nights my mom would play the hell out of Rio De Habitual. You have been one of the most prominent and influential guitarists in my life, and one of the factors that inspired me to pick up the instrument. For that I am grateful.
God Bless you and Tara

hey anybody seen Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind? I just saw it last night and it shook me up. i though it was a beautiful flick, and i'm guessing it must be as comforting to the ones who get loved back as it was a real sob for me...
nonetheless i give it two thumbs up, as well as the other kaufman flicks.
any thoughts on that, dave? what about the rest of the community?

Dave,
Orbitz gum, man. Best shit in the world to help you quit smoking:
1. There's no nicotene, so you're not rationalizing that you're getting your fix a different way...it's just gum!
2. The packaging is so similar to cigarettes, it's inSANE!! When you break open a fresh pack, you have the cellophane with the little strip that you pull. Then you flip back the little triangular flap. And then the best part is you have these little white sticks all neatly packed in there, wrapped in foil.
Honestly, if you want to quit, and substitute something better for you, Orbitz on the habit side, and coffee to keep your juices flowing...that does it for me!

Once again, thanks Dave for just being such a cool person, I always appreciate that and for the advice a while ago. Here's a question-was Nothing's Shocking and Ritual de lo Habitual analog or digitally recorded? RDLH production sounds awesome

Hey guys, Hello Dave.
Dave, question for ya. Does addiction run in your family? The reason why I ask is that I found out a couple of years ago that my dad was an alcholic adn drug addict.(my parents have be divorced for 25years) It scares me that I could end up like him. I am 5',2" and I can really drink alot. I know when to stop but sometimes my mind wanders and I want to keep goin'. BUt the past few months have been VERY stessful for me and I have been thinking of drinking or taking something. WHat should I do? How do I stay away from stuff like that? And for anyone out there that has advise please email me and let me know. Oh and by the way, I am 28years old. There is no under age stuff going on. Thanks Dave. And to everyone for there advise.
