Weekend Update

dave_spread_iconWell, it has been really nice hearing from most of you, and for those who it wasn't so nice, I respect your voice. No worries. Anyway, tonight on Indie 103.1 FM I will be debuting a new single from a band called theStart, produced by the highly talented Brian Virtue. theStart, features a great singer named Amiee Echo who used to be a member of the band, Human Waste Project. It is great to see more female voices out there rocking. Anyway, I really love them and if you are interested, check it out. Also, I will be spinning a track from an early Banyan record called, "Anytime At All". The track features Stephen Perkins, John Frusciante, Joey Klaparda and Mike Watt. Really a great and interesting album.

Someone asked, "Why all the interaction now?" I guess for several reasons, really. We have this new thing and we are starting from the ground up so to speak. We wanted to be able to keep anyone interested updated. I would also say that inspiration breeds inspiration and we are kind of in a mode where we are just doing stuff on our own and enjoying it. It's kind of a home grown vibe which is fun, cause we don't even know where we are going sometimes. For me, I also just really missed having this site and being more hands on. The site will eventually move when we find our new domain, but for now, we figured, might as well fire up the old URL.

A couple of quick answers. Danny Saber is a very talented engineer and producer. He used to be a member of the band, Black Grape. It is great working with a producer who is also a musician. His senses are all the more sharpened. As for my relationship with the Chili Peppers, we are very close and always will be. I have since done shows with Flea and Chad and spent a lot of time with Anthony. I think John is just the greatest too. My experience with those guys was one of the best I have ever had and I wouldn't trade it for anything. They taught me so much. I have such a great deal of respect for them and their history. I have actually been playing a lot of early stuff of theirs on the radio show, songs from the Uplift days. Anthony has an autobiography coming out this year. He has an amazing story and I am really looking forward to it. I believe it is called, Scar Tissue, but I am not certain. Be sure to look for it if you are interested. Talk about hope, that guy has really shown all of us that faith can conquer so much.

Thank you for your time, support, comments and opinions.
Dave

Rocking out is awesome, but don't be afraid to push the boundaries and create different and intriguing stuff. That's what the music is all about. : )

Thanks for the answer to my question dave!!!!

That kicks ass that yer going to play the Start & Banyan 2night. It kicks ass to see the fem vocalist from Human Waste Project & the drummer now in a new-wavish kinda band. There aren't very many bands exposed like the Start or even Banyan out in Hollywood...i guess we all just have to sift through the cookie cutter club bakeries to see some cool shizzy.
Elixer will hopefully be hitting up el lay w/some music soon. We're 2 females trying to be gnarly... i guess we can be considered doods because our tastes vary from Janes, Marvin Gaye, Chili Peppers, Banyan, Primus, Stevie Wonder...
Anyhow, yer lucky to have a talent like Perkins...it's so hard to find a drummer!
Take Care,
roxy

I just wanted to thank you for keeping us updated on everything. Cant wait to hear the new music and good luck with everything. Thanks again. This site is much appreciated.

I have to say I feel blessed by the fact that I enjoy listening and watching some musicians, and they take some of their time to keep me (us) updated on what they're doing. It's fucking great.

I'd like to know a bit of the "music study" background of you ppl. I study music and I play several instruments, some learned on my own and some with a teacher. So, did you study with a teacher? on an academy? by yourselves? It would be cool & inspirational to know that.

Peace... and take care. Thanx for staying alive.
greetings to the ladies :)

Do you do real sappy dedications of cheesy, overly emotional songs on your radio show, a la Casey Kasem? If you do, then I think you should do one for me. Just make up a story about some girfriend who was forced to move to Mexico or something, or maybe my cat getting ran over. Also maybe you could give a shizot out to my hizomies. Thanks.

Dave,

Thanks for the update, much appreciated as usual.

I´m glad to hear you´re friends with the Peppers, they´re one of my favorite bands and I love ONE HOT MINUTE. Warped and Transcending immediately come to mind as great musical achievements.

Speaking of Anthony you said:
"Talk about hope, that guy has really shown all of us that faith can conquer so much."

I was wondering what kind of FAITH you meant by saying that? I mean, is it faith in God or in yourself - or maybe a bit of both? Are you (have you ever been?) spiritual/ religious at all? Just curious. I find the theme fascinating.

Love from
Luiz.

PS: A question for the other peeps around here... Am I the only Brazilian posting on this site? Gee, I feel special! LOL! Dave, I know you have never played here but... Have you ever visited Brazil? I bet you would like it. I heard the Peppers and Perry did.

Speaking of autobiographies, will you ever venture into this field, or will 'don't try this at home' answer all the questions ?

I hope the new band is everything you've always been searching for...all of you!

Quick question: what's the status of Stephen's side project with Taylor Hawkins of Foo Fighters? There was a brief mention of them doing something together over at foofighters.com, and we're all really curious about this! Thanks....xoxoxo Tara

Hey Luiz!!! I´m brazilian too!!! Too bad that Dave never came to our beautiful country. He will come!!!
A few questions about Strays:
How much input did you have on the art of the album? Are you satisfied with it?
Where you satisfied with the singles that were picked?
Thanks
Jorge

I think it's so great that dave is so good about interacting with the fans and answering questions and keeping us updated...i think it shows how great a guy he is and how much he cares about the fans and people that support him, and i think in that post, he also respects the people that disrespect him, which shows a lot of faith and confidence in ones self...i really admire that, and i really admire dave...he's totally my icon and inspiration

Posted by: blondimofo at June 26, 2004 09:15 PM

Dave,

Thanks for the reply. Anywho a few more questions:

1. How many songs did you record during the Strays sessions?

2. You guys still talk to Eric Avery?

I think The Start's song Gorgeous has a somewhat JA vibe to it. I thought Chris didn't do any drugs? Guess I'm wrong.

Dave,

Its very upsetting to hear about janes breaking up. I figured something was wrong when
the new years eve show at msg was
canceled and the 1/3/04 show in camden,
nj; both shows i had tickets.

Music is what keeps me going and janes addiction reforming was simply amazing. Well
I've been waiting everyday for
The Police to reform, i guess i'll
add janes to that wait again.

My question is Why does this breakup
have to be permanent or seem permanet?
You are all young AND JANES ADDICTION'S
MUSIC SHOULD NOT GO UNHEARD FOREVER.
dont be like The Police.
good luck with your new projects
and i'll go back to my exciting teaching job.

Forgot to ask this:

Steve, what are you gonna do with all the recordings of Jane's? I know there's a lot of people out there who'd pledge their first-born for some of the tapes I'm sure you've got. Let us know if you've got anything in mind for these recordings. There's more desire for those than I think you could imagine.

Is Camp Freddy coming back to NYC anytime soon, or any solo one off gigs?

Posted by: Pete at June 27, 2004 01:25 AM

Yeah, 'tis called "Scar Tissue". (: Aw, and listen to you sounding like a dog left out in the rain with that 'keep anyone that's interested updated', makes you sound like nobody's interested! And my person experience of inspiration breedng was more of a green fuzz and a bad smell in the corner of my bedroom so I'm hopeing yours is/was a lot more successful. (:

Man,

I luv my PowerBookG4 more than my Gibson sometimes! (Cant believe I'm actually writing this!). Anyway, the OSX world is the best OS you will find for us, Musician & Artist. Loaded with LogicPRO & PROtoolz, and all the Apps 4 the internet. Feel free dave to post for help bout the OSX! I'll be more than happy to help you.
About the music now: Playin' everythin with everyone is just the key. Especially as a guitarist, it's so important that our play benefits from all the inspirations that people can give us.
My old man used to say when I first start learnin guitar (about 13years, God!we're growin old): "Turn on the radio son, and play on whatever comes on!". It makes your hear, a power tool. U never get bored Dave, and that's the key, Create, thats what we all should do.
Really lookin' forward to seein this site 's rebirth, and as everyone here, and bein a (small) part of it.

From UK & France, ;-)

*I'm running off to the studio*
I'm so inspired I'm going to book some time tomorrow!

2 questions:

What's the best advice you can give anyone making a new demo after 12 years?

Which are better: Songs where the lyric hits you first, those where a piece of music makes itself known, or those that come out of a damn fine magically evolving jam?

And one more, because it's something I can't explain:

Do you ever feel like there is someone sitting on your shoulder when you're writing.

Peace and Love

There are rumours you guys were jamming with Eric Avery at one point floating around the message boards. Any truth to the rumor? (Figure'd I go straight to the Unicorn's mouth)

I'm glad that this site is up again...

I gotta admit that i find Jane's breakup fucking annoying. JA was great!

But hopefully you're gonna write some solo-material now?

Is there gonna be a follow-up to Trust No One?
