State of the Union
OK. We know we can't avoid this anymore so we will give it our best shot. What's the deal? The deal is that it simply didn't work out. Sometimes things just don't work out. In all honesty, we have broken up and rejoined roughly four times over the years. Perhaps that should shed some light as to where we are now. We really don't know. We do know that we really gave it everything we had this time and we actually made a really great record after so many years of silence. That was definitely a great thing and we are all proud of it. We were able to do a lot of shows and travel and see the world again. We had some amazing times. Why didn't it work out? So many reasons. Some of them over 15 years old, some of them new and none of them worth mentioning. Maybe we are just a volatile combination. Maybe that is why we were so great. The bottom line is that we are all extremely creative and motivated people and I know we will all continue to create and work on many different projects.
After 20 years, just like in any relationship, you have your highs and lows and some amazing memories that can never be replaced. We were able to create great music together, and for that... We feel blessed. But sometimes relationships don't work, no matter how much time or energy you put into them... and at that point... you realize it is healthier to go your separate ways than to keep trying to recreate the magic of the early years. Sometimes people grow apart in the relationship, it is nobody's fault really... just a fact of life... an inevitable creative dissolution. Sometimes the best creative relationships are the most combustible and they aren't meant to last forever.
We know this doesn't answer all of your questions, but hopefully it answers some of them. We would personally like to say, "thank you" for all of the love and support you have shown us over the years, we greatly appreciate it and we love you.
Stephen, Dave & Chris

Shit!
I am about to make Jane's Addiction wings logo tattoo tomorrow. What a fucking great moment. Now i'd like to say "my heart is broken" as Perry did yesterday. Two beautiful moments in my life (shows in Berlin and Paris) and soo much expectations to see you together.
I'm sad, I'm unhappy, I'm broken. But who cares....

Must be exciting to start afresh
Good Luck guys

If this really is the end then thanks for the music and shows. The last show I saw you at was KC in December at that hole in the wall bar. Best show I've ever seen and it had all the energy I could imagine the old days had. Dave, I think you hit it on the head with the negative energy making you guys so compelling. Anyway, as much as this sucks, I know firsthand all too well about trying to rekindle the fire with people after years have passed. Bits and pieces are still there, or to steal an Eric Avery line, its a shame when the parts fit, but the machine won't work. Thanks again and lets hear some demo's once you get the legalities taken care of.

thanks for the great concert experiance with janes. i hope to see you with your new band soon.

This is the best thing you 3 could have done. Leave the past and all it's problems behind, and use the talents you 3 possess to move into the future.
Besides, seeing as though particular people from particular "relationships" are still working together, we know what (WHO) the problem is/was/is.
Rock the fuck on. And don't worry about explaining anything. Most of the Jane's Addiction community (COUGHxiola.orgCOUGH) spend more time talking shit about the 3 member involved in the new project than they do about any actual music. Fuck people's inability to stop living in the past. I say put a giant middle finger on your new album, pointed squarely at the narrowminded lead-singer's-club that pretend they liked anything more than the flashy center piece.

This is a sad, sad day..... I did think this would happen again but that makes it no easier to accept. I have shed some tears for the loss of my favourite band (again) but I guess we have to look to the future now....
Good luck with the new project guys, hoep it rocks as much as Jane's did and..........
DON'T FORGET YOUR UK FANS WANT TO SEE YOU TO!

Well I'd have to sling my oar in on the side of: Shut the F up you whingers it's not your band, don't sit there in your dark room telling the artists what they are and are not allowed to do with their lives, or why they do them. You don't know these people, no matter how much you want to, so leave it alone.
Still, am I noticing a pattern here in Dave's career?
Join Janes, release genre-busting CD, watch everything come off the rails for random reasons;
Release Deconstruction, watch everything come off the rails for random reasons;
Join Chilis, release great but chronically underrated CD, watch everything come off the rails for random reasons;
Release great solo album, watch everything come off the rails;
Reform Janes, release great CD, watch everything come off the rails;...
I'm not saying there *is* a pattern. But it looks to me like there's a pattern.

Nice... ty for being honest about this thing. We were worried about what happened, some were worried about who's fault it was.
And BIG THANKS for trying to make it work, once again. Strays was good, I got to know Chris, and I could hear some evolution on everyone's playing.
I, for one, don't want to take sides here. I know you 3 guys can make some kick-ass music. I know Perry has moved me and will continue to do it. So, enjoy your talent! I'm very glad you moved on, instead of playing with lack of interest.
Peace, hugs, and the best luck in this project.
And once again, thanx for letting us know what's up. We can now rest in peace :)
Peace

BTW... I'd like to know (if you guys know)...
Did Eric A. give a shit about the Jane's reunion?
That guy is a punk, and I love him.
Peace

Hey, guys
thanks for making things clear for us. That was really thoughtful of you. And it´s good to know you have so many new paths to explore in the future.
So good luck on your new project - I know you guys are gonna ROCK - as usual.

Hey guys,
Thanks for filling us in. Its a shame but everything has to come to an end. Hopefully this choice will salvage friendships for you all in the future.
Again looking foreward to hearing the new project.
Rock out with your cocks out.. (Remind you of the RHCP days Dave??)

do you still think eric avery is the smartest man alive for not getting involved in any jane's addiction reunion?
Posted by: sonny at June 23, 2004 06:14 AM
Replenish the humble.
I THOUGHT IT WOULD NEVER COME TO THIS........
Posted by: perry4prez at June 23, 2004 06:18 AM
I remember reading about a book called "Eric Avery is the smartest man on the planet".
RIP Jane's.

Posted by: RockingGroove at June 23, 2004 07:02 AM
Dave, I've said this before, you need to call up Eric A. and get Decon going. It is the most amazing album out there.
And will you be playing on his solo release?

I WAS LUCKY ENOUGH TO SEE JANES AT THE FOX THEATRE IN ATL. IT WAS GREAT!! YOU ARE THE HOTTEST MAN EVER AND I LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING YOU AGAIN NO MATTER WHAT BAND! I LOVE YOUR WORK.

I am very sad now. I think I should be appeased by letting me make out with Carmen.
Posted by: gamecock at June 23, 2004 07:45 AM
Sad to hear it from the actual band. Guess I was just hanging on to a glimmer of hope that you guys would just get it together eventually, but I can't say I'm surprised. For all the naysayers who said that Jane's 2003 wasn't the real deal. It really was, and they broke up at the end of the tour just like in the old days. ;^)
BTW met in you in NYC at Tower Record AFTER the signing. Thanks for being gracious.

sad to know about jane's addiction........and to me, who am trying so so hard to not end a long-lasting relationship with the love of my life, it sounds like a sad day - a defeat........but thanks for make it clear.
so i was so lucky to see you in london last november, probably.
please don't forget europe now....we don't have here so many chances to see you.....please.....
thanks.
love you so much****

Dave, Wow.... what can I say but "Thank You" from the bottom of my heart. You guys are the reason why I picked up my surfing gear and headed out West to surf. I've seen you play several times with Jane's over the years and I'll keep seeing you play when ever/ where ever/ with who ever if possible! In all honesty Dave your a hell of a guitar player and you have given me some really meaningful memories and well "inspiration" when I needed it most. So don't stop! I wish you all the best in your new pursuits. All I can say is Rock on Dave!!!! Best wishes!!! Be safe and be well!!!

I am so happy I spend part of my rent money to get tickets to see Jane's at the Culver City show!!! I would have never forgiven myself if I didn't get to see Jane's live again (once at Coachella and the Culver City show).
Thanks for all the great Janes memories and here's to making new one's!!!!

Thanks guys for, hopefully, clearing up the confusion and putting some of the craziness and speculation to rest!
Looking forward to new adventures...best of luck!

Awwww, this sucks, HOWEVER all of the members of the band are extremley talented and have the ability to put out great music that some fans will really love and some fans will really un-love! I guess the best thing fans can do is be greatful for the awesome music ya'll put out as a group and enjoy and look foward to new projects. I just wish I coulda seen you guys in conert :(! Oh well, Dave come to Vancouer ;) ;)
Posted by: Alisha at June 23, 2004 09:51 AM
I think this is a good thing overall. Bringing Janes to an end will allow for more projects to be released with great live performances. I'll take that over extended periods of silence.
Good luck.

btw, Dont forget Boston.

Bound to happen. Both sides will have their reasons I guess. Shame though. I hope it's not just the catfight that blew it.

doooood....
i'm sorry to say that it's been strangely amusing watching the drama unfold at the various jane's sites over the last couple of days. kinda like watching that fatal car wreck on the side of the road. you are sickened by the whole thing but strangely compelled to look.
i'm sorry that it came to this. cryptic online posts and not so subtle attacks on others rather than being able to deal with this IN PRIVATE. it's too bad that some people feel the need to create drama and animosity. it's even worse that the community that supposedly supports you guys have to perpetuate it.
good luck to all of you. i'm sorry to see jane's go, but hey, nothing great was meant to last forever...
Posted by: dood at June 23, 2004 10:27 AM
Thanks to you all for helping me through a difficult last year. Its sad that it has all ended but if it had gone rotten it had to end. Thank you again for 02/11/03 it was truly an amazing experience, you are all such amazing musicians. I only discovered Jane's last year through the release of Strays, being 16 years old obviously i wasn't able to remember you from the first time around but from last year you made a huge impact on my life and inspired me to make something of myself . Sorry if this is making u want to puke but its true man . Good luck with everything to do with the new band!

When you toured in 2001, I remember hearing from many people how they had given up the idea that they would ever the get the chance to see Jane's Addiction, but there we all were, and it was great. Even though I am sorry things have not worked out in the long run, thanks for the memories (and the music). I look forward to seeing how this new mix of people work out and I definitely look forward to when you decide to tour again. Just don't forget your fans in NC when you do that tour schedule, ok?
Posted by: Susan at June 23, 2004 12:17 PM
Sorry to hear Jane's is no more, but I'm glad you three are still making music together. Looking forward to hearing the new stuff and hopefully seeing you on tour!

Very diplomatic(!) but why do I get the feeling there are a lot of potentially more interesting/informative viewpoints still to come...

Dave,
I've loved Janes for all of my adolescent and adult life. You, Steve, Eric and Perry are musical idols to me. Musically I've been living in 1991 for way to long and have been anticipating Janes being the guys to bring a great sound back to the forefront of popular music. I view this as a bunch of egotistical bs. You are going to cover a legendary history with crap. Don't John Paul Jones your navigator.
Posted by: dave at June 23, 2004 05:25 PM
Dave,
Thanks for the clarificaton! We can all slap a disc and capture things as we would like to anytime. The only way that I would ever be disenchanted is if all of you stopped making music. I don't care what band, genre, or format it is. The common thread to each and every one of you is that you have found the one thing in life that you are passionate about. The single thing that makes you tick, and the best part is that you are all great at it. If its this project, solo offerings, or any other desires, just do it.
You are all the genuine article of what is right with music and its place in the world. And I am grateful to be able to listen and hear the colors you all weave.

Hey Dave,
You know that your fans love that you are so versatile that you can play with different bands such as Jane’s, Chili Peppers, Christina, Puff Daddy to name a few.
I think its great it really shows what a really talented musician you really are.
Be proud of that. I love going to the shows to watch you play. And will look forward going to see you tour with the new band!
Also I’m truly Glad to also see the light of day on the book, I thought it wouldn’t ever make it to Print.
Take Care!

Dave,
I'm a little sad but what can you do?? You win some and you loose some. On a side note I hope that you never stop making music. Like someone else said I don't care what genre it is as long as it is.
