Jay-Z & BET

dave_spread_iconWell, that was a mess, but a fun mess all the same! I'll check back in later with a more complete report.

OK. Here's what went down. Let me start by saying that it was awesome to jam with those guys. You may find this hard to believe, but we rehearsed for two days! There was a problem though. You see, there was a TelePrompTer (with all the lyrics and such) for the days of rehearsal, which everybody could read just fine. (This is real behind the scenes type stuff here.) When the audience was in, they all stood on their seats to see Jay-Z, unintentionally standing right in the way of the prompter, so Kid, was stuck without his lyrics. As for the mix, welcome to live television. The mix was just awful but what can you do? That's just the way it goes on TV sometimes. The real disappointment was the fact that we had Rick Rubin right between Love and Sheila E, scratching on the turntables and they never even cut to him once! He was amazing and had that killer fur coat on he wore in the 99 Problems video. All in all, it was a really great day. I made some cool friends, hooked up with some old ones and got to jam with one of my favorite Hip Hop artists.

Actually following on from that last question... I'd really like to know - outside of past and current projects - who your favourite vocalists are ...

And thanks for coming back here so often and keeping us up to date ....

You did an awesome job, and everyone looked like they were having fun. That's what it's all about in the end.:-)

:O Why was it a mess? I haven't seen it yet :P

Posted by: Alisha at June 29, 2004 08:35 PM

Dave

I came to the site to post after the performance to give my comments but I did not want to be negative. However it really did look to be quite a mess. It seemed like Kid Rock missed his vocals a couple of times during the "99 problems" track.
Also at the end of the song when you were about to go off that dude just starts raking on your strings???? What was with that? The camera work during the songs were shakey at best. I thought you looked bad ass but could not really hear you sadly. Dave your a cool mother fucker to come on the site & post right after the performance. How was the whole vibe at that place? Did the crowd dig the live guitars?

Still cool to see ya on tv again man.....

Dave,

Just watched you on the BET Awards. Too bad Kid Rock messed up the lyrics a little bit. Must have been some miscommunication between him and Jay-Z. ?uestlove is one of my favorite drummers. How is he to work with? Why don't you think that more hip-hop groups use a live band like the Roots? It would sound more like a concert instead of a replaying of a CD.

Thanks,
Mike from NYC

LMAO! Well, it was good to see you Dave...and it DID look like fun!

Can I just say 99 problems is probably one of my favorite Jay-Z songs...He just plain rules...
"do I look like a mind reader sir, I don't know..."
Well that sucks ass that I missed it.

Dave, what kind of recording equipment do you have? any brands of gear you like? i'm thinking of getting an Alesis HD24XR to record with and maybe a Behringer digital mixer to go with it. i would get a better mixer, but heard the Behringer is great for the price. If you have any ideas that would be great, if you want to donate some gear to me that would be great too!

Dave,

Did you notice the host introduced you early? I was all excited to hear the group, and then all the sudden 'oops'.
It looked like you were having fun, even with the probs. Glad to see you there! And Sheila...wow! As a female drummer, it was GREAT to see her face up there with you and everyone.

Stephen,
I just promoted a show with a band I called S.W.A.T. (Melvin Sparks, Rob Wasserman, Matt Abts & Topaz)in Norfolk, VA. I was talking to Rob and he says he will be playing with you on the road this fall. Is he on the new album as well? Will Mike Watt be doing any of the shows on the road also? I can't wait until we do a show with Banyan or the New Project. Keep Darin informed and we will set it up as soon as you are ready. Thanks

Dave,

Just wanted to take a minute to let you know I'm excited about the new project and wish you and the boys well. Can't wait to hear the new stuff! Thanks for getting the site up and running again and for being so accessible. Very, very cool.

Also, just wanted to let you know that my girl and I are already getting ready for Halloween. My buddy always throws a big bash and we're going as you and Carmen. We're putting together some pretty killer outfits and we kind of resemble you guys so I think it will rock. I think you'll dig it so I'll send you some pics in October.

Stay true,
Brian

what do you think makes a better musician: someone who can play their one intstrument really well or someone who can play several instruments well enough to say they can play them and also know loads of music theory?

Posted by: bianca at June 30, 2004 07:28 AM

Oh yeah dave one question that has been killing me forever.

What type of effects do you use in the song summertime rolls?Thats some freaky sounding things.

HAHa....Another insanely amazing thing you can do is give us some tabs when ur new website is perfect.Or atleast some songs everyone is dying to play perfectly....i.e.TREE DAYS!!!

Thanks again.

That's awesome man, glad you had a great time. Yeah, 99 Problems is my favorite of his songs. The lyrics are hilarious and awesome. Great guy.

'Ey Dave.
What is you favorite Jimi Hendrix cd (Experince AND Band of Gypsys)

What do you think of South Park?

What is your favorite dinner, 3 course menu and everything?

Your favorite healthy food?
Favorite junkfood?

Are you going to see The Cure ?

Posted by: scotisheyes at June 30, 2004 08:09 AM

Thanks, as always, for the update; for being so upfront and forthright with your fans. You're the best!

Question: I know that you're extrememly fitness/diet/appearance-conscious. (More than you need to be, IMO, but that's your choice and I respect it.)

Which diet do you recommend: Vegan, Atkins, South Beach, the Zone, or everything in moderation?

Hey, Dave

It´s great to hear you had such a good time playing with those guys! 99 problems is an awesome song, I really like Jay Z´s sense of rhythm, he´s got a great flow.

too bad Brazilian TV will never air something as cool as this... any chance you might be putting up some videos of your performances on this site soon? that would be sweet...!

rock on!

love from
Luiz.

Yeah...I wanted to ask the question a guy above asked about "Summertime Rolls" It's one of my all time fav Jane's songs (behind Three Days)and I love love love the guitar work on there...I would love to know how that effect was reached...the song has almost a trip hop feel to it...i love that song.

and you rock!

Posted by: blondimofo at June 30, 2004 09:53 AM

Yeah, the final preformance sucked at the BET Awards, but in show business, as in real life, mistakes are a part of everything, but its good to see you dont take these things too seriously. Anyway, I was going to ask you if Anthony ever rsvp-ed? i saw it on til death do us part, and i wanted to know...

As far as members of the RHCP not being at the wedding I believe they were doing shows somewhere in the US or Europe or something at the time. Those guys didn't really get much time to be home until March or something.

cool to hear Rick Rubin was there!

Posted by: mortisha8 at June 30, 2004 11:03 AM

I wish there was a way to go back and edit posts. Any way to add that functionality?

By March I mean March of this year. They also just were doing shows in Europe all throughout June and they're in Japan at the end of July.

Anyways, glad to see all my favorite musicians out there doing there thing.

Hey, Dave.
I really wanted to let you know that you're the sexiest guitarist out there. Not so much for your looks, but more for your style. I say not for looks 'cause I'm a guy who likes chicks. But your playing just drips sexuality. I think the sexiest it gets is when you play One Hot Minute. The album itself is one of the best from the Chilis, but that song... Let's just say it got the ladies in the mood no probs.
You rawk more than Tony Hawk.

Hi, Dave

Oh, and FYI Dave if you didn't know, there is a forum called "Don't Forget Me" on the official RHCP message board dedicated to former RHCP members and you are the most talked about in there. Your fans are alive and well on that board.
