Hello from Dave

dave_spread_iconHi everyone! It's good to finally have this site up and running again. A lot has been going on so we decided to finally pay the host bill and kick this thing going again. BTW: forgive the lack of content as we are under deep construction, but we wanted to be able to tell you all what is up and hear from you too. Currently, I am working on a new project with Stephen Perkins, Chris Chaney and our new friend, Steve Isaacs. Steve, or "Spooky" as we call him to differentiate between the Steve(s) problem, is a terrific guy and very talented singer who used to be in a band called Skycycle. Due to the bleak nature of the industry, he was unable to release the great record he made for MCA. (We'll see if we can't post some of it up here soon.) I first met him in 1991 at an MTV awards show. I later met him while he was performing as "Tommy" when Pete Townsend took his rock opera on Broadway. Steve killed it man, it was truly amazing. Fortunately I was able to get reacquainted with him this year (he was a pivotal coach for me at the Celebrity Poker Showdown thing... where, I really should have listened to him) and the music just started flowing. We have all had such a great time. We have been writing and recording demos for a couple of weeks with my dear friend Danny Saber at the console. Hopefully we will be able to debut some stuff on the Camp Freddy radio show on Indie 103.1, Saturdays from 6p.m. to 8p.m. Camp Freddy, by the way, is kind of a fun cover band I do with Matt Sorum, Billy Morrison, Chris Chaney and Donovan Lietch. We have a revolving door of musicians and are working on a record with producer Mike Clink. Proceeds go to charity... but you can learn about all of that on the site.

Anyway, what else? Oh yeah! The book. Some of you may remember I was working on a book with Neil Strauss. Well, that is finally, finally, finally coming out in October or November of this year. I think there is some information about that here. It's called "Don't Try This At Home" and it contains some pretty intense text about a dark time in my life accompanied by photo booth strips. Wait. Didn't Steve-O from Jackass put out a DVD called "Don't Try This At Home"? Well, yes he did, but since I started this thing so many years ago, and had the title way back when, I figured, who cares? I'm keeping my title. I don't mind. Steve-O is awesome. (It's a great DVD if you haven't seen it yet.)

I just realized how much I have missed all this Internet stuff.

So the obvious question is why did it take so long? Well, to be honest, when the book was done I was still pretty fragile and close to the darkness. I knew that there had to be a positive message and I couldn't just fake it. These things take time and growing and healing. I didn't want to just put out a book of true dark stories and helplessness without having a light resolution. I felt it wasn't responsible. I also wanted to edit out some stuff that potentially implicated others or could cause them harm, emotional or otherwise. Now, looking at it years later, I feel that there is a point to it all. That there really is a story of hope and the suffering and documentation wasn't all for nothing. Anyway, I have rambled on enough about it, let's just say that it feels like a ton of bricks has been lifted since Neil and I finally finished the damn thing earlier this year. We are both happy with how it came out.

Well, that all I can think of right now. We will all post stuff as it comes up or as we remember it. We also look forward to hearing from you and corresponding. Thank you so much for checking in.

Dave

P.S. Does anybody have a copy of that alphabet I made years ago out of Key Caps when I was all cracked out? I'd love to revisit that.

I can't wait for the book. I love your music so much, it keeps things going for me sometimes.

Good to hear from ya' dave. I'm glad you're keeping busy with projects. People are freaking out 'cause they j.a is over, but I know you'll record with them down the road. Enjoy the summer!!!

Posted by: j at June 18, 2004 09:35 AM

you should've never edited the book. postivity is all around us, people need to see yr dark times. i for one am looking forward to this new band....although with some of yr celebrity decisions lately, i wonder if yr still "cracked out" as you put it. where do you draw the line? you'll play guitar for anyone who has money? cause i could come up with some cash if you and eric would just play one show of deconstructions stuff. i'll even let ya pick the drummer ;) sober and clean doesn't have to be dull and boring.

is perry insane!
by the way..you owe us a janes tour and cd..!

HELLO FROM KATY

Heeeey.. the site's back! What a blast from the semi-recent internet past! I'm (still) looking forward to the book. Happy ending or otherwise, I'm very curious. (But I think you're probably right about the "ray of hope" edit being the "responsible" thing to do. I'dve bought the damn thing regardless, of course. But hey, motion of the ocean.)

I hope you have a fun summer playing with your new project and Camp Freddy (and Carmen! Mwahaha.. ;D )

And if you and Perk and Chris happen to swing back into Perry's sphere of being, say, sometime in the fall and decide to, I dunno, tour (EUROPE!) or record or do just about anything under the Jane's Addiction banner.. well, that'd be fabulous too. (Last autumns European shows were AWESOME. The Halloween-y/fireworks/bonfires time of year really suits the JA tour experience, in my opinion. Maybe the Pussycat Dolls could "support" next time, so nobody gets lonely. The Suicide Girls burlesque troupe went down a storm at Donnington (Download, aka Monsters of Rock, festival) this year. Seems semi-naked women and loud rock music go together quite well. Shocking...)

Anyway, yeah, happy to see the site again. ROCK ON, DAVE! (And belated congratulations to you and Carmen. The wedding looked absolutely gorgeous on TV. And, hey, did Anthony Kiedis ever actually RSVP?)

Glad the site's back up! Great news about the new band and the book coming out. Looking forward to your new music!

Man!!!! I can´t believe this site is back!!! Great going Dave, I thought you had gave up on us. I have to say that at one period of my life I used to visit it everyday and it always had new things. It´s also great to hear that you are working on some new music.
Keep it coming D!!!!

Posted by: Jorge at June 18, 2004 12:33 PM

BTW, if u ever need a new drummer write me an e-mail... I'd be pleased to play with ya, I only need a nice kit (provided by you, of course) and a plane ticket (you take care of that too). And we can live happily. I can sleep on your living room on in your bathtub. you get to pick.

peace yo :)
Oh... Carmen is hot dude. But you're hot too, so it's not unfair. :)

Evenin' Mr. Navarro, nice to see you're still up and about and... up, and... a bit more about, that's very good. (: Anyways, yes, hello.

Now I'm gonna go lock myself in a dark room, I have this image of you as a little nerdy teenager poring over a computer *grins*

You rock, man, and I promise that as soon as I have spare money I will go and get myself a copy of Don't Try This At Home (I'd get it from the library instead but as my county is one of the worst funded in England and a lot of my town's library shelves are stacked with phone books for Welsh mountain villages in the 1980s... you see my predicament!).

Love, Soph x.

PS. I've always wondered since I found out about you... did getting those nipple piercings hurt? Well, I guess you're getting some use out of them (;

Hey Dave first glad to see you've got the site back up man and that you're finding more outlets for your art. Looking foreward to the new band and another solo album.

One more thing you should head down to Roatan on a dive trip. Best scuba on the planet.

Hey Dave, nice to see the website back.

But it makes me wonder, did you put this back up because i emailed you a few months ago and suggested it?

Hey Dave,

As a fan from the late 80's I would love to hear why your "Mach 8" version of Janes dissapeared so fast and out of nowhere we get news of a new band with every member of the current Janes but Perry. Call it curiousity. Nice to see the site back. Say hi to Carmen for me.

Hello. Mister N you are a prodigy.
I think more ego-massaging should occur here.
Your guitar sounds like waterfalls of sound.

Posted by: Intergalactickillerdeathfairy at June 19, 2004 03:06 PM

Dave,

Sounds like you are knee deep in creative energy, with your new outlets. I sincerely hope you have the time and space for another solo effort. It seems that in every musical effort you have pursued over the last 15 years, you're playing continually evolves, and I for one enjoy musical parameters you push, in a variety of genres.

Cheers!

Posted by: Mike at June 19, 2004 09:41 PM

Dave...you are God...plain and simple...I will support anything you choose to do, will buy anything you put out, even if it's a cd of you reading the telephone book. Your music, be it singing or playing the guitar has had a profound effect on me. I love everything you've ever done, be it with Jane's, RHCP, solo work etc. Congratulations on everything that's happening in your life...and I'm glad things seem to be going well. Continue to keep on rocking!!

PS: Can't wait for the book!! and glad the site's back up as I missed it the first time around

Posted by: blondimofo at June 19, 2004 10:19 PM

I just wanted to say Dave you are such an inspiration (I know that is sooooooo cliche!) I am so anxious to read the book, waited so long for it! Anyhow, Dave Navarro is one of coolest cats in rock, I love your style, your voice and of course your kick ass guitar skills! You know Dave, if you see this comment, I wanted to ask you something? Do you know who DeVante is? Well, he's not a rock muscician, he's a soul music producer, but it would be like my dream come true for the two of you to get together and jam.One could hope! Ok, take care Dave. (K)

Greetings Dave,
Its so awesome that the site is back and that we get the opportunity to post up comments. Like others on this board have said you are such an inspirations to me. Your one of my musical heroes. I loved "trust no one" and your sick guitar playing style throughout the years in your various other projects. Im so happy for you; your knee deep in creativity with your new projects and the various good things that have been happening in your life. I hope that things keep being positive for you. I cant wait to purchase your book. Take care and best of luck in your endevours. Cheers!!

Hi Dave,
I'm glad to see this site working cos i missed it the first time ! Looking forward to finally being able to read the book. And whatever has happened with Jane's Addiction thanks for playing in Manchester ,England - it was so special being able to see you all. Oh one question- What happened to The Riches being released as a single ? Love to both you and Carmen.

Hi Dave...

I can't wait to read your book. I saw you and Carmen in the MGM Grand the night before the Billboard Awards, and you both looked so beautiful and happy together. Glad you're out of the darkness and into the light!

xoxo from a long time Jane's fan

Hey Dave,
I saw you with Jane's 4 times during your tour to Australia for the Big Day out, great shows (Gold Coast was the best!) you guys were having a blast! Thankfully I got front row for 3 shows. Chris was on the money every night.
I loved the old Spread site, It's a shame that all the video footage that was to accompany the old Spread tracks is going to waste, it would be great if you could release it all on DVD like you first intended. I got a handfull of tiny clips from the old site: part of the Hungry (starving) video, Venus in Furs, and one with you running around your house with a shot-gun to some funky riff.. and others.
It'll be great to see this site full of content again.

Good luck Dave, hope to get a chance to see you live again in the future.

Hey Dave,

Nice to see you with your site up again. Thanks for being the one biggest inspiration for me picking up my guitar everyday and practicing and being in my band The OCD.

On another note, are you ever going to do another solo record because Trust No one is the soundtrack of my life literally, i listen to it non stop.

Your obsessive guitarist fan Oli

By the way, great gig at the Wolverhampton Civic, it was amazing.

WTF?!?!?!?

Posted by: perry4prez at June 22, 2004 08:29 AM

Hey Dave,

Come on, be honest with us and tell us what happened with Jane's. It seems you chris and steve have distanced yourselves from Perry and we all just want to know why.

Does it have to do with money, record sales, Etty or what. I know I will get no responce from this post or you may tip toe around this subject but never fully address it. All us Jane's fans just want to know the truth and to know if there is any chance that our favorite band will vere play another show or record another album together. Lots of people are against you, and blame you for the breakup or hiatus you guys are on, but I don't, I know there is a valid and resonable sotry behind it, I still have faith in you man, pull through for us old dogs that just want to have some closure on this subject, instead of everyone on the message boards speculating what happened.

Thanx
