...And More Stuff
Just wanted to say hello this Monday morning. I am so amazed by the feedback we have received. I am sorry that I can't get to all of your questions but I am doing my best to answer a broad range of stuff that covers most of them. Rehearsal yesterday was crazy! It was Jay-Z, Sheila E., Kid Rock (who is quite a guitar player I found out), myself and some really incredible guys on drums, bass and keyboards. We are actually playing this stuff live as a band without a loop or track. Usually the Hip Hop live stuff has at least a recording of different elements playing along with the live stuff. I know some frown upon my doing stuff like this, but I just thank God for the experience and opportunity. What fun! I also want to say thank you so much for coming here. I know we all don't see eye to eye all the time, but the fact remains that after so many years of doing this music thing, I am amazed and honored by your interest. Truly a blessing. I know that in moving forward I have to accept the fact that I can't make everybody happy. I do accept that. I think it is just a part of life. Anyway, we are doing our best and we appreciate the support we have received and the opinions that force us to think a little deeper as well. I am excited about this new journey and I hope to meet some of you along the way. God bless...
Q: Hey, why don't you get Rick Rubin to hook you up with Trent Reznor? (for Camp Freddy)
A: That would be awesome! I got to do Head Like A Hole with him back in 1991. What an amazing guy. I suppose we could ask him to do that Adam and the Ants cover he does, Physical.
Q: How F--king Cool is your assistant to take one for the team? (anal ring toss participant on Howard Stern)
A: Wasn't that unreal? The coolest!
Q: Are you & Carmen going to consider future MTV reality projects?
A: I don't know. We had fun doing it but the whole deal was the wedding. Now that we are married, there is not much more "show" to be had. I just loved being able to work on something with her.
Q: Your my favorite guitarist, and Les Claypoole my favorite bassist. do you think you too could do a project together?
A: I'd love to but I don't know that I could keep up with him!!!!
Q: But do you see you and him (Avery) ever getting Decon together for a one off show or anything. That is such an amazing record. It's a shame that no one even seems to know about it. I'm still pissed at you by the way...
A: Thank you for that. (The amazing record part, although I am sorry you are pissed.) I don't know, it would be kinda cool, huh? Decon actually never did a show once. I really appreciate all the positive feedback about that record. It really was an amazing time doing it. The funny thing is, you wouldn't believe the shit we took when we made that album. I guess that is all just part of doing your thing. (one's thing)
Q: I wonder what your take on DECON is?
A: I loved the record. I guess the reason we never went any further is two sided, by that I mean multiple. One is that Eric didn't want to tour and the other is that I had just been asked to join up with the RHCP guys, who did want to tour. I love the studio process, but I also love the touring as well. As a result, Eric found Polar Bear (Avery's Band), which is great, and I got to meet some really incredible people.
Q: I am not blaming anyone in particular but jeez, couldn't you have kept up the lines of communication at little better?
A: Oh, my friend, we ALL tried. Ever had an X that you had great sex with and that you loved unconditionally, but you just couldn't communicate? If you have or if you haven't, it is kinda like that.
Q: I was wondering, have you ever played or recorded with Red Hot Chili Peppers' John Frusciante?
A: No, dammit! I would love that so much. I could learn so much from him.
Q: I'm intrigued to know myself... who's a better kisser, Carmen or Anthony?
A: Uhhhh... Let me do some more research on that and get back to you.

Hi Dave!
Me and my boyfriend managed to get tickets for the show you played @ the Culver City studios and I just want to say thank you! It was the best show, we were right against the barricades on your side.
We are getting married next year and are trying to incorporate rock music into the reception but are finding it a bit difficult. We want "our" type of music played but still want people to dance. Any recomendations for us??? :)

Hi Dave!
Any idea how far into the program you and Jay-Z will be on? (Don't wanna tape the whole thing!)
Also...if there were no fans at all to hear it, would you still make music...just for yourself?
Thanks!

Hey Guys,
After the Jane’s show on Jan 3 was canceled, we were so sad but now we have hope! Can’t find any info on Camp Freddy shows yet in the NY area, is there a mailing list? Couldn’t find one on campfreddy.net…
Ever think of touring with Nine Inch Nails this year? If you could pull it together that would be awesome!

PRETTY PLEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAASE???!

Dave, I so think you and john frusciante should get together and record a track or something. that would be my ultimate favorite song of all time to hear my two favorite guitar players of all time to play music together. just a thought.
Posted by: Master Zekk at June 28, 2004 10:53 AM
also i have a question dave. have you ever talk to or heard stuff from wes borland? what is your take on him? he's got a solo record coming out. I think he is awesome, but seeing as you're friends with so many musicians i just wanted to know if you knew him.
Posted by: Master Zekk at June 28, 2004 10:57 AM
Hi there, nice to hear back from you.
Hey Dave, are you going to have a "weird videos" section, like you had on one of your sites, with a chinese girl puking and stuff?
If you're gonna, I got TONS of material (by that i mean around 1Gb) of damn weird videos you can have there...
I'm very glad that you're PLAYING MUSIC and PLAYING WITH MUSIC. You're truly blessed.
Oh, and thanx for teaching me how to play the guitar.
And thanx to Stephen for teaching me another drumming point of view.
And thanx to Eric for showing me the bass.
And thanx to Perry for the style of life...
ahhhh, the memories... long life Jane's.
Keep rockin!

This is truely a great thing you are doing with this website, dave, and i just want to thank you *again* for being so kind to take the time to do this for some of your most genuine fans. well, that sounded too politically correct for my tastes, but i dont have the brain power at the moment to redo it.
What do you think your best work is? i know the first answer in your head will be "all of it", but what do you truely think was the best work youve done?
p.s. are you going to go see Fahrenheit 9/11? And yes, i did have to look up the spelling...

i have to comment on what fabian said, i also use a cheap epiphone, its an acoustic, but i love that thing to death. i cringe everytime i see someone smash a guitar, so please... if youre going to do it, at least use one that is already totaled... please?

Please ask Stephen when he plans on getting his site up and going again.
And if there are any plans for Banyan to be playing in the Bay Area sometime this year
Thanks

Hey Dave,
Thanks for keeping your fans posted. Sounds like you guys are moving forward in a direction which will be good for everyone. I for one am just happy that you and Stephen will still be playing together. Spealing of Stephen, his site seems to be down these days. Know if he plans on updating? He was and still is my number one influence on drums. I love being able to keep tabs on his projects. Those Banyan albums are incredible, and chance you will contribute to the new one at all?

Dave,
I'm a complete and total loser. Please disregard anything I've said about you on my website. I'm just a loser, and since I have "ELF" posting on my site all the time, it just makes sense that I kiss her and Perry's ass as much as possible. See, I didn't even really get into the band Jane's Addiction until the relapse tour in 1997. Yet, I try to act like I know more about Jane's Addiction than even the band members themselves.
So, since I suck at life, and really lack a life....I just try to knock others to make myself feel better. No hard feelings?
Thanks, your biggest fan,
Hokahey

hey,
never knew until today this site was back up, but anyways, i just thought i'd ask some random stuff, seen as i just finished work, and it's getting dark.
Q1: should i shave my head and pierce my eyebrow???? would that get me laid more???
Q2: Were you super-pissed that Ant Kiedis didn't go to your wedding??? i mean, on that mtv show, you seemed kinda annoyed. did flea or chad turn up???
Q3: do you ever just think, "fuck it all, i want some smack"???? i imagine most ex-drug peeps do, and just wondered.
anyways, enjoy this week. oh yeh, i just wondered what you thought you could 'learn' from Frusciante too??? i mean, you seem pretty with it as a musician as it is. Frusciante seems to be like a man posessed these days, with regards to his music output.
You LA types intrigue me.
anyways, adios.

It would be cool to see you guys and Daniel Ash make some new music together. A new super group made up of Love and Rockets and Janes Addiction. Would you ever consider this?
Anyway, you guys are great. Its crazy that perkins won't be playing with perry after being together for so long. You guys have helped shape a generation of music. Thanks

Do u think you'll be touring in london this time round if a solo record comes out? Camden Town would be a cool place.

I'm looking forward to the performance tomorrow, my tape is ready. :-) Do you think you & Carmen will release 'Til Death Do Us Part on DVD? I would definately buy it, but I could see maybe not wanting to license it. Backing up paperdove, are you going to see Fahrenheit 9/11? I thought it was pretty amazing (though I'm a big Michael Moore fan;-))

Q: Is it true that not only did you post about the demise of Jane's on your new band's site but that this is how Perry found out?
A: Actually that is not true.Actually that is true. That is how I found out. I would never do that. I was just answering questions posted here, in all honesty. I don't know where Tyler gets his info, but he is pretty accurate.
PF - And those Q & A somehow ended on yahoo.com and RS.com,oh, okay - Trust No One
Q: It seems like you've single handedly ruined a legendary band. Overall, the Jane's fans don't seem to see your side. What do you have to say about that?
A: I am sorry that some feel that way. I don't think any one person has the power to ruin something so bigger than life and great. The truth is I don't have a side. I wish everybody the best, but airing specific personal information online is inappropriate and unnecessary. We are just trying to stay positive and focused on the present and the future.
PF - Your side, through your actions is heard loud and clear. But is it then alright to go behind people's backs, sell them out and undermine them as long as people don't find out that it was you? Unforturnately the responsiblities for Jane's Addiction fell on Perry Farrell's shoulders. It was apparent that Jane's Addiction was selling the farm and I did not want my name on the deed

There you go ELF.....you asked for it, you got it (actually, I'm pretty sure this post is from Perry himself ). Thanks for being the number one cunt to ruin this great band by airing your dirty laundry on a fansite, of a fan of the band since 1997. That's just fucking laughable right there.
I say fuck it Dave, let that bitch have it! I initially said you were a stand up guy for not lowering yourself to this shit, but fuck it, you've got to say enough is enough and punch back.
All I know is that this new CD better come out hitting hard because if it's some top 40 sugar-coated pop rock like the Chili's last CD.....you guys will have a hard time ever showing your face around anything Jane's Addiction again. :)

You know what. Let Perry and "ELF" look like the childish ones. Congrats on taking the high road on this Dave. Perry is just pissed off because he's living in the past (Lolla in 2004???? This isn't 1994 anymore Perry...might be time to join the rest of us in the 21st century). And he's pissed because his mighty ego won't allow him to compromise with the rest of his band members.
First Eric leaves him, and now the rest of the band leaves him. Geeze, I wonder who has the issues?

Dave,
You seem to be handling the 'bad stuff' very diplomatically. I understand that you feel posting personal issues between band members on your site would not be respectful. Your right. Personal issues between band members are not public domain nor should they be. I do feel, however, that a vague explanation of why Janes broke up is less than what your fans deserve. I'm sure your waiting this one out hoping the questions will dissipate over time and that will probably happen. Is that a way of avoiding conflict? Yes, but that is up to you. After all, this is your forum. Many of us fans have made Janes a big part of ourselves over time. It could be said that some of us are looking back instead of forward. We are. This is because really understanding why our beloved band dispersed is important to us.
Posted by: Dave at June 28, 2004 05:27 PM
jesus people....this isn't a slag site. if you have petty complaints go take them to ain't no right. why can't everyone just leave well enough alone? i could care less about the petty gossip & about why things happened, and or whose fault it is. like they said...things just didn't work out....end of story...everyone is moving on. these guys are amazing musicians (per, perk, dave, chaney)...we can expect some amazing music from them in the future, i think that is more exciting than begging for trivial details about the he/said she/said shite.

Hey Dave,
Here's a weird question for ya: Several years ago, you (and Chad?) remixed a song by Jamiroquai.
I was wondering if you were a fan of theirs, or if it was just something off-the-wall you were doing, simply as an interesting creative exercise? I ask because I am a huge fan of both your music and theirs. (What a combo, right? LOL. Go figure!)
BTW, I appreciate the analagy you made comparing your guest spots to Eddie Van Halen on "Beat It". I remember being a child listening to the song, thinking it was the coolest thing in the world - the combination of funk and rock. When you put it into that perspective, it all makes sense.
Best of luck with ALL your endeavors! :)
Posted by: Denise at June 28, 2004 07:32 PM
The reality is a.) Janes broke up and for those of us who are fans, it sucks, its just a fact. But, b.)we don't know these guys with the exception of their music and do not need salacious details or information about the whos or the whats involved. It doesnt matter. Just accept it as a chapter in life and move on to the next one. Hey, we're fans and that's what we're good at, we're not gossip columnists. So What!
Posted by: Nora at June 28, 2004 07:33 PM
Hey Dave,
I just wanted to leave you a message and pretty much say what everyone else has been saying; it's a really great thing you are doing (along with Steve) to have these sites to keep us up to date. I play guitar in a band (nothing serious at all though, just for fun) and I've always thought that if I ever 'made it' (in the commercial respect) I would do exactly this. It seems like a lot of today's artists (and even veteran groups as you guys were) don't do enough to interact with their fans. I feel like I'm ragging on people, and I know that all of you guys in the business (hopefully) realize that you are your fans essentially. So to see you do this, responding daily to people's questions, talking about your projects and how they are going, etc. is just amazing and such a step in the right direction (not for you, just in general for the music business). Who knows if others will follow your lead, but I know that my love for a band would only be made stronger by being able to actually interact some way with them. Sure, there are the obsessed fans and all that just want your autograph or whatever, but there are also the fans (like most of us replying here) that realize you are a person.
With that said, I'm really looking forward to this new stuff. I'm sick of hearing everyone say 'oh no, not another supergroup', but whatever man. If you step back and look at a band like Audioslave, that's pretty awesome in my book. Why not take people that have proved that they can make great music and get them with other people? It's like with you and this Jay-Z stuff. That's cool as hell and I had no idea until I read some here today. I guess you've gotta accept that some people will rag on you for doing it, but pleasing yourself in this instance is definitely what is most important. I know I said that 'you are your fans', but I think a real fan would realize that this is what you want to do, and I personally think it's a great idea.
Who knows if you'll read this, but if you do, good deal. (I hope this doesn't sound unreasonable or weird, but) drop me an e-mail sometime if you've got the time and want to chat or something. Can't wait to hear more from this project, and good luck!
- Brad
PS: What do you think of Muse? Everyone is saying their bass-lines are a lot like some Jane's stuff, and I see it (especially in songs like Hysteria). I think they're great. I hear a lot of Thom Yorke in the vocals, as others have said, but it's a cool combo. Just curious.

Hey Dave,
When is your next Camp Freddy gig here in the LA area? Can we expect something in the next month before Matt goes off to Europe?? I had a great time at both Avalon shows, maybe a little too much fun but what the hell you only live once. I think I caught you laughing at my drunken ass during the Vanity Fair show. I could be a little retarded at times. Anyhow, can’t wait to hear a preview of your new stuff. Thanks for keeping us informed.

Hey Dave,
That Danelectro that you have, is it an original or one of the re-issues. If original is it a 3021 or is it a single pick-up? What recordings is it on. Just wondering because I have an original 3011 myself, and Im into Danos.

What is with all the speculation of the breakup of Jane's? I don't really think they need to explain themselves any further.
I don't know what the members of Jane's are planning on doing now, but I think if they do something together without Perry they would be great with a female lead singer. Seriously, I think that they would be incredible with the right female voice accompanying them.
They should hold auditions or something. I would definitely be there!

I just wanted to let you know I love and have allways loved your style (dreds and all)! Growing up my Dad worked for one of the top rock stations in Sacramento and would bring me in with him while he did the late show (this was the late 80's). You were one of the Famous crushes I ever had and the first person to teach me that you can have everything and feel like you have nothing. Out of evey artist I've met and seen you are on the top of my list of those I would love to see. Does this new project have any plans of making it up to the San Francisco area? I missed you last time. Can you please fulfill at least part of a dream and send me an e-mail or an autographed pic?? PLEASE?? I would do anything for this!

Dave,
After playing with Kid Rock, would you not agree that he would make a much better front man for Van Halen that Sammy Hagar?
Also, there is something wrong with the clock on your web server, I am posting this @ 11:44 est. not 3:43 am.
